Every October we all see it...Pink. From soup cans to dump trucks, everyone is all about the pink. However, did you know that October is also Lung cancer awareness month? [their color is pearl/clear in case you were wondering]. Why does breast cancer (one of over 200 cancers in the world) get the lime light more so then the others? It can't be because it is the world's deadliest form...that would be lung and bronchial cancer.(1) It can't be because it is the world's most common...that would also be lung.(2) Its got to be because it effects boobs. "Save the tatas", "I heart boobies", "Hope for hooters"...slogans that are cute and make people giggle when they say it. Do you know of any cute slogans for prostate cancer?
Speaking of slogans...Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Komen foundation has sued other foundations (including the Lung Cancer one) over rights to the saying "for the cure" and the color pink.(3) Wonder how they paid for those lawyers. How is all that money distributed? A diminishing amount of 15% goes to finding a cure.(4) The rest is for promotions, education, and administration. I feel that we should just bypass the foundations and give straight to the researchers if we are concerned about a cure.
The rundown: Remember there are other cancers that people are fighting out there and look into a foundation/nonprofit before backing them up with your wallet.
